What is ';Motion of/for Discovery';regarding statements given in criminal court cases?

During a recent conversation I had w/ someone they mentioned a ';Motion of Discovery'; that was given to them regarding a criminal court case...can anyone explain what this is to me?What is ';Motion of/for Discovery';regarding statements given in criminal court cases?
Yes, the defendant is required to have access to all the material that is going to be used against him! Discovery is almost automatic in criminal cases!

Some discovery is not allowed unless it has a bearing on a case. Usually the judge makes that decision. What is ';Motion of/for Discovery';regarding statements given in criminal court cases?
A motion for discovery is a request that the court order the other side to provide copies or allows inspection of documents or other evidence that would be exculpatory during the trial.
