What do judges look for in custody cases, aside from who is the best fit parent?

It really depends on the location of the jurisdiction and the judge's personal bias.

Some judges split custody in half, some don't. It may be best to negotiate an agreement that evenly divides the child's time so as not to risk losing and getting only visitation.

Although judges are well-educated and often value education-oriented parents, I've seen judges give custody to a father who lacked education because the mother got a job two hours out of district.

A judge can look at past arrangements and attachments. If one parent stayed home with the child, that parent will usually have an edge in the custody battle.

If one person has more mental problems, the other may have an edge in the custody battle.

I had a situation where my son's father thought he could get shared custody when he married. He and his wife left the children unattended and went on vacation. He had a past problem with alcohol. The eldest step child was charged with drug possession. My son's dad could have obtained custody because he was willing to lie on the stand and we had no documentation of these incidents. I'm a single parent and didn't have as many emotional problems but lied and trashed me in his filings. I was able to prove perjury and I won nearly everything but waiting three years for all of this to resolve itself was nerve-wracking.What do judges look for in custody cases, aside from who is the best fit parent?
