Are There Ever Cases Where A CEO Won't Be The Most Powerful Person In A Corporation?

Are there ever instances where a CEO of a company won't actually be the most powerful person on the board or won't run the day to day operations of a corporation?

For example, are there ever instances where the CFO will be the person with the most power and the CEO is show how subordinate or less powerful? Are There Ever Cases Where A CEO Won't Be The Most Powerful Person In A Corporation?
I've seen it only when the CEO is unofficially retired. However he still has a say when he decides to have a say about anything. Are There Ever Cases Where A CEO Won't Be The Most Powerful Person In A Corporation?
I've seen it once where the CEO had a major stake of company shares, but when heading for retirement, sold shares to the other directors, and with it went the weight of his decisions. Therefore the company was more in the hands of the directors than his.
