Why do doctors put embolitic stockings or bandages to patient in peri-operative cases?

what are these stockings for?Why do doctors put embolitic stockings or bandages to patient in peri-operative cases?
They reduce the amout of blood that pools in the lower legs, which reduces the chances of a clot forming. (They are supposed to have you elevate your legs for about 15 minutes before to help all the blood get up towards your heart) They can also use compression hose, which they put on the leg and they inflate and deflate- this helps move the blood back up to the heart. Why do doctors put embolitic stockings or bandages to patient in peri-operative cases?
They improve circulation by putting pressure on the extremity and squeezing fluid out - thereby preventing the blood from pooling which would lead to clotting, which could lead to am embolism.
